Microsoft To Compensate Early Adopters With Issues on September 22, 2006. Microsoft finally owes up to a somewhat shady initial launch batch of Xbox 360's.
It seems that the Tokyo Game Show is not only a time for showing the latest games, but also to owe up to some past mistakes.
The internet since the Xbox 360 launch has been a breeding ground of bad buzz for the console with many message board posters complaining of hardware failures, overheating and well, much grief.
Microsoft has stated that the initial launch batch of 360's have been failing at rates higher than expected. So to remedy this (as best as a company that aims to make money can) Microsoft has announced it will compensate users with broken 360's purchased before January 2006. Repairs will be free and for some of the people who had already paid for repairs "out of warranty", they will receive refunds.
So all in all this is a good day for 360 owners yes?
Well, for the early adopters yes, but the online negativity isn't simply reserved for those consoles. While maybe not as vocal as the launch owners, there are quite a few people who have purchased their 360 after January 2006 and have had hardware failures.
Microsoft is not covering those consoles, and as should be expected, they didn't manage to explain what exactly is causing these 360's to fail, or what makes the 360s failing before or after January so different.
For any more information that pops up from Microsoft, you should expect it to pop up here.
