Resident Evil Review

Introduction
Resident Evil was a glimpse into a new genre known as survival-horror, which was released in 1996 for the Playstation. The game itself was excellent, containing great gameplay, a scary story, and an overall eerie appearance. This was the game that people were afraid to play with the lights turned off. It was really a jump start to all the scary games that have been released in recent years. The remake of the game could only get better. Capcom allowed its team to work on an updated version for the next generation console. With this being said, the more powerful console really shows all the game is. Saying this, you may not want to play this game with the lights turned out.

Gameplay
Some parts throughout the game take you by surprise and give you a good scare. It is hard to walk around a corner without being scared, especially when the Crimson Heads are around (they are the zombies that come back after a good chunk of the game has been completed). Little things can be done to prevent certain things from happening as well. Burning the bodies of the zombies stops them from returning as Crimson Heads. These little actions are clever and make the game deeper. The herbs also play a big part in the game. It is hard to go through the game unless you know how to conserve herbs and health. Herbs mix together to make special herbs allowing more health to be regained. The in depth gameplay is a very critical part of the game.

Story
The gameplay was a big part of the Playstation version of the game. The ability to pick which character to play through the game with is a very good feature. Playing with each character allows different things to happen and a challenge. The two characters are Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. Each also has their own perks. Some of these include Jill having a lock pick while Chris has a lighter. Also, Jill is allowed eight slots of items while Chris only has six. So playing through the game with the opposite character is an adventure in itself. With this being said, playing through the game with one character is not an easy task. There are many puzzles that need to be solved throughout the game to complete it, and some of these puzzles take a lot of thought, while others are obvious. The puzzles are thought out, nonetheless, and completing them brings about a great feeling of accomplishment.

Graphics
Resident Evil’s graphics are just fantastic, there is no other way to describe them. The zombies are horrifyingly disgusting and realistic looking, and even the characters look real. This game has the best graphics to date on the Gamecube, no question about it. Everything is detailed including the walls in the mansion, where you rarely see any that look the same as another, to the doors that you walk through. The graphics really put you into the game and make you extremely, for lack of a better term, scared as hell! The whole presentation is pulled off extremely well in this game. That is what the Playstation version lacked, the realism that is offered in the Gamecube remake.

Sound
Everything fits into place for this game, including the sound. You can hear a zombie when it is near and it is growling, which sends a chill down your spine. Not only do the sound the zombies make do that, the music also puts an eerie sense into your brain, making you freak out. The voice acting in the game is also done extremely well. The voices match the characters very well, and make the game more realistic. Even a heartbeat can be heard when opening some doors. The sound is just implemented very well overall.
