Breath of Fire IICapcom8.5

Breath of Fire II Review

Introduction
The first Breath Of Fire was a Good port of a good game. But the age was showing and I rather wish they had done more to make it new again, aside from slapping it on the Game Boy Advance and shipping it. The gameplay was simple and the game represented a traditional RPG feel. The game was choppy in the story department but it did enough to make you continue playing. I had high hopes that the sequel would be a better game and I was right. I mean its not perfect (no game is) but it does improve upon the original in many ways. The game is longer (not by much but longer), the gameplay is tighter and more accessible and even the music is ten times better. I think that this game is a game that truly deserves to be in the top 10 classic RPG's of all time. Not because its brilliant, but because it shows that with slight improvements a game can be more than just a cookie cutter filler for the more popular RPG's.

Gameplay
The Gameplay is noticeably smoother than before and it is more fun to play. Although there're still plenty of random battles, the game makes you want to play in most of them. There are a variety of weapons and items and even magic to gain through the game and it keeps the interest factor up even more so than the original. The game is still difficult but this time I think Capcom expected people to have gotten used to it so they didn't make it easier. The game is better when its difficult this time around as it makes a sense of challenge that really wasn't there in the original game. The bosses are bigger and the game is longer. The game will take most RPG veterans the same amount of time as the first but the difficulty will keep people in this game longer. While there aren't that many side quests (the basis of RPG longevity) the game if fun enough to play twice. Overall a ten fold improvement over the original.

Story
Breath Of Fire Has a strong following and I know why they love this game. Because its fun, that's all RPG's have to be. But the game doesn't just have fun, it has an improved story. That is what makes an RPG, its story. And this game delivers it.

Graphics
The graphics have a more colorful look to them but basically the visuals are the same as in the original. Which wasn't bad to begin with but I once again wish they would have upgraded the visuals to fit the Game Boy Advance better. It doesn't hurt the game at all though and the animations are noticeably smoother than the first game. The sound has also improved as the music is much more neatly done and fits the mood of the game much better. The music sounds less generic than the first and even the sound effects have been given a lift in quality. I never became tired with the music or the sound effects. Even the magic effects sound better this time around. I overall think that the sound is a plus.

Sound
Overall i think that Breath Of Fire 2 is a great achievement in what sequels should be. They should always be fresher and make the players want to come back. That is exactly what Breath Of Fire did to me. I recommend Breath Of Fire to all RPG fans as this game is a great RPG game for the Game Boy Advance. Much better than the original and no second opinion should make you change your mind about this game. Go buy it because you will not want to miss out on a great RPG.
