TimeSplitters 2 (PS2) Review
Introduction Timesplitters 2 is one of those games that you have to play before you actually realize how fun it is. When you look at screenshots you probably get the impression that it's a gimmick first person shooter that just threw a bunch of characters into the mix and some really cool weapons and called it a game. Well in a lot of ways you could say that, but that wouldn't mean you were right. Although the game does revolve highly around the multiplayer aspect and the cool gadgets and weapons along with the 120+ characters doesn't mean that the game doesn't have other things going for it. There's arcade league mode, where you play in all types of deathmatches trying to set a record for most kills or fastest time to a certain amount of kills and you get medals. Gold medals unlock things usually like new characters and game modes whereas a bronze or silver just unlocks the new venue you just played at usually. Timesplitters 2 is definitely the best FPS to date though no matter how you look at it. If you thought Goldeneye or Halo was the best well prepare yourself for a much more engaging experience.
Gameplay The multiplayer mode is the real strength to the game though. The bulk of the game is based on it. I mean what other game has a multiplayer mode where playing against bots is pretty fun since they are actually intelligent? Not many. Because this game is the only one I can think of and that's indeed a good thing for all of you whose friend's aren't exactly big time gamers or FPS freaks like you. Because the A.I. is really smart and when you crank up that difficulty they will play up to or past your skills. You can easily get better though thanks to the tight and easy to learn controls. So you'll be striking right back and having fun doing so. When playing against other players though in modes like capture the bag, vampire, and shrink the game gets radically fun and it is easy to become addicted to this one game. Overall I highly recommend Timesplitters 2 to all gamers who are even slightly interested in the FPS genre.
Story I should probably start off by saying that if you like your FPS games to be built mainly on story then this is not the game for you my friends. You should probably stick to Red Faction, Halo, or Half-Life, even Dues Ex would be a better buy if you're looking for a story mode aspect that is solid and is one big story. Timesplitters 2 story mode is composed of 10 short stories. Each set in a different time era and each with it's own story and characters to go with it. Is this bad? Not really, just not what some of us were expecting. Many of us were hoping for a true story to the game. It's okay though because the majority of flaws in the story are made up for with the games excellent mapmaker mode that has been a mainstay in the Timesplitters series. In this little mode you can tinker with options and make your own game level for multiplayer, story, or both. You do have a limit on how much you can cram into a level but the game is so fun that you won't care because the levels end up being extremely huge and fun to play in.
