Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (PS2)9.5

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (PS2) Review

Are you scared to buy the new Mortal Kombat, for fear of another horribly bland rehash of previous MK’s? Fear not, this game is actually good, I would go so far to say it is great. It is the most fun you will have on any fighting game, on any console. MK: DA has been completely revamped, and now has better graphics, a deeper control system, more to do, and many, many goodies to buy.

The very first ting you will notice are the MK vets, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Sonya and Kano. Then you will see the new fighters, Li-Mei, Bo Rai Cho, Moldov, and Kenchi. If this cast is too small for you, then you will be happy to know that you can buy more characters. To buy them, you have to fight in either Konquest mode or Arcade mode to gain Koins. After you acquire these Koins, you can go to the Krypt and buy Koffins. In these Koffins are characters, weapons, concept art, character profiles, movies, arenas, costumes, and tons of extras. Some will fight, fight, and fight again. Then, they will die, go to the krypt, buy a couple of Koffins, and then repeat the process. It is obsessive compulsive bliss.

The graphics are the best of the genre. They look real, but since the game is set in an unreal place and time, MK: DA has a style like no other. And they are sticking to the same style they started... a sadistic fighting game full of blood. Deadly Alliance has more blood than every other Mortal Kombat combined, though, it mysteriously looks like red, flowing jell-o. The characters have had some major work done on them. Every muscle is sculpted and shaped. They flow with the body, as if the combatants were real. This time around, they also show damage. In the latter seconds of the battle, both characters will have black eyes, bloody noses, and cuts all over their faces. MK: DA is the only game where you will see this feature.

Most people would think that, since this is a Mortal Kombat game, it will have a ridiculously cheap fighting system. Thos people are dead wrong. Each character has three fighting stances, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Two of them are unarmed styles and one is with a weapon. This makes for an endless combination of juggles that can be preformed. At first, these combos are very hard to pull off, and most will stick to one stance. This is where the Konquest mode comes in handy. The Konquest mode is a series of ten missions for each character to complete. It serves as a great tutorial for the different styles of each combatant, and the stances he or she possesses.

The game’s sounds are great. You hear grunts, moans, and squeals from the fighters until one is finally killed. Plus, you get to hear Scorpion and his trademark saying, “Get over here!” There is also a music video by the band Adema in the extras section that is quite good.

So, Mr. I Think Mortal Kombat Sucks Because the Last Couple Weren’t So Good, buy this game. Then play it. I promise you, you will enjoy every blood-drenched second of it.
