Frogger: The Great Quest6.5

Frogger: The Great Quest Review

Introduction
The video game Frogger used to be one of the most well known arcade games in history. But in the new age of games and technology, the series has taken some big risks and not all of those risks have equaled success. There is another Frogger game on the Game Boy Advance, but that version of the game is more similar to the arcade original, than it is towards the new editions of the series. This Frogger game is based on what many consider to be the worst video game platformer in history. That would be its Playstation 2 counterpart, which recieved more bad reviews than good. Luckily for this game, its is not nearly as horrible. Yet, this game is not perfect in any way. The game is similar in story and layout to it PS2 counterpart but it removes what destroyed the PS2 version. That would be the fully 3D third person world. It nearly destroyed every aspect of what the frogger series was meant to be. Now while this new edition doesn't restore the originals flair, its does present the gamer with a fun and straight forward platformer.

Gameplay
Sound is fairly average and the sound effect are generic. I was agitated by the overly Looney banjo tunes that play in the background. The music is well varied and isn't that bad. But the banjo makes the game look like it came out of a country western flick. The sound effects are decent but are quite generic. The sound effects some times crackle and they do not vary that often. Listening to the same coin collection sound becomes an annoyance and makes you wish that even the coin noises were varied. The sound and music is decent but it will not win a Grammy, or my full support for that matter.

Story
Graphics are surprisingly refreshing. That does not mean they are perfect, it just means that there are certain aspects that make the games visuals shine. The character models and animations are slightly stiff but they still present the illusion of a 3D model in a decent way. The character models most remind me of the Donkey Kong Country series as they are colorful and well animated but also were slightly stiff. Frogger also is quite limited in his animations but he is one of the best models that the game has to offer. The game's backgrounds are very colorful and well animated. They also remind me of the Donkey Kong Country series. The games cut-scene art work is very nicely detailed and convey the weak story better than the text can. The only noticeable flaw that I see is that when there is a tremendous amount of enemies or animations on screen, the game will chug ever so slightly. I think the graphics are the best aspect of this game.

Graphics
Gameplay is where Frogger slumps. Do not fear though the game is very playable but the fact is, you may get bored half way through. The game consists of a few stages and a challenge round and there are very few if any bosses to speak of. The game itself while playing is very good. You collect coins to gain a higher score and there are variety of enemies to fight but the enemies are simply reduce to how many time you have to hit them. You will usually always be able to vanquish enemies before they attack you. There are many obstacles to go through. You must swim, float, ride on a cart suspended in air and many other things. The fact is by the middle of the game you will begin to see the same mechanics and they begin to become rather boring. The player may begin to ask themselves if they have done all this before. Oh and don't expect a great story either. This game has a pretty dumb plot that will leave you only wanting to play more. People looking for a story, look somewhere else.
It is basically a straight forward (sometimes boring) platformer that can last a hardcore gamer a day and a casual gamer a weekend. I suggest a rental for Frogger as it is quite short.

The game is not bad, but not great and many wonder why it is still considered to be one of the worst games for the Game Boy Advance this year. The answer is simple. There are many better platformers out there to choose from and this one isn't really recommended by many reviewers. You either like it or you hate it. The fact also remains that many reviewers constantly compare it to its really bad PS2 counterpart. That is wrong because it is twenty times better than that. Go out and rent it now, but think twice before making a purchase.
