Klonoa: Empire of Dreams8.5

Klonoa: Empire of Dreams Review

Introduction
Klonoa: Empire Of Dreams is one of the best platformers on the game boy advance. Its only second to Super Mario World. It features an easy simple interface that even a baby would know how to operate (ok maybe not a baby). The colorful vibrant graphics are complemented by simple yet effective animation. Klonoa has a run of the mill plot with a story that may be too cute for some. Except that many people don't played platformers for the story, but for the action. And Klonoa is light on the violence and high on the scale of simple puzzles. You may be stumped briefly every now and then but it never really gets in the way of the otherwise smooth flow of the game. The game is quite long (although no where near as long as Mario world) and will take a while to beat, but if you sit and play non stop I think three days is what you will gain from this game. It has a Mario type level set up that is basically a homage to the Super Mario World Map design.

Gameplay
Graphics are the gem of this game. The backgrounds and surroundings are colorful and vibrant and the enemies are cool to look at. The terrain is somewhat plain and bland but that is the only aspect of the graphics that is really noticeable. The animations also seem to be a little bland as the characters move in a very stiff manner. Even Klonoa looks a bit on the rusty side. The game runs at fast speeds and there are colors galore. The characters are all very detailed and fun to watch and the game shines although its not quite the marvel that Super Mario World was.

Story
While not as interesting, it does hold its own against most level set-ups. The enemies are rarely different from what you see at the beginning of the game but there is slight variety later on. Level design is sharp and interesting, especially since you usually have to plan your jumps. Overall the gameplay is a charm, and while not as intuitive as the Ps2 incarnation (which is understandable) its is a solid achievement overall.

Graphics
Sound is quite ho-hum for the game boy as it is quite simple. The sound effects are chirpy and are used over and over again. The music is slightly overused and can be annoying with its up beat vibe. But nothing to cry about. I think that more work could have been done to improve the sound overall but
hey you know it wasn't that bad.

Sound
Overall this game is an excellent achievement at what the game boy advance is capable of. I do hope this is not the last time we see the hero in action. This is enough of a Mario filler until a new true sequel comes home. Go buy it, you wont be disappointed.
