Megaman Zero Review
Introduction Some people would say that the Mega Man series has lost its appeal over the years. They would also go on about how many sequels have been made and how the formula and game mechanics stay the same sequel after sequel. This Mega Man game will make those people duck and cover, mainly because its the same Mega Man the fans know and love. In this series all that matters are the fans. The game plays out basically the way all Mega Man games do, enter a level and find the boss. The truth is, that's why the fans keep coming back. Its because the developers are not striving to make something new or innovative, they are trying to make a game that can stand next to the other games in the series. Capcom has highly advertised this as the most difficult Mega Man game to date. They were very right when they said this because as it turns out, this is actually one of the hardest Game Boy Advance games of the year. Is it good? Well, if you're a Mega Man fan, then I would highly recommend it but its mainly for the extreme Mega Man veterans and not for people new to the series. Capcom has succeeded in making this game a worthy addition to their library.
Gameplay The graphics are also very similar to most Mega Man games and that is good to hear. The Mega Man games have always showed heavy emphasis on true Japanese animation and the artwork is astounding. The backgrounds are highly detailed and the character animations are just what you would expect from capcom (which is good). The bosses are once again great to look at and have great animations. The biggest thing to look at is Zero the main character himself. His animations are fluid and highly detailed. While the variety of enemies isn't that much, there are plenty to keep you from getting bored with the game. I will also have to say that this game was designed to be darker in tone than most Mega Man games and it shows mainly in the level designs. Overall the graphics are nothing to stay away from.
Story The gameplay is essentially the same as all the other Mega Man games to date and that is not a bad thing at all. There is once again a wider variety of weapons to choose from and plenty of different enemies to fight against. The game has one of the most deep stories that the series has ever had in its entire existence, and that is saying a lot. Mega Man games have never really been about plot, but this one does a good job of explaining why you are playing this game. The biggest treat of the Mega Man saga has always been the boss battles. Once again it does not disappoint. This game features some of the best bosses in the Mega Man series and they are each difficult and fun in their own ways. The biggest change to the game would have to be its difficulty, which has been significantly increased due to high demands for a more challenging sequel. New people to the series will often find them selves exploding or falling to their doom very often until they become accustomed to the game play mechanics. For hardcore veterans though, the game should be right up their alley. The game is as long as any Mega Man game which isn't very long at all, but it does make you want to play again because of the sheer fun many will have playing it. The weapons and action will please most gamers and I have to say that the gameplay is what makes this game shine.
Graphics The sound is pure Mega Man and Capcom puts the Game Boy Advance to the test by adding neat sound effects throughout the game. These are mainly seen in the cut-scenes. You can hear breathing, pacing, exhaustion and even running. It adds to the overall feel of the game. The music is upbeat in a more techno dreary way. Due to the darker tone of the game, most of the tracks are very heavy on deep sounds. Luckily it is not bad, in fact its nice to see more variety in the series music which has always been one of its main weak spots. Overall the sound is great.
Sound This is one of the best Mega Man games ever and while it may not be as innovative as the Mega Man Battle Network series, it does have enough to keep the fans happy. Its not a game for people new to the series and is very difficult. Overall I recommend this game to all Mega Man fans and Im glad to call it one of my favorite games this year. So go buy it, unless you're scared.
