ChuChu Rocket!9

ChuChu Rocket! Review

Introduction
ChuChu Rocket! was originally created for the Dreamcast, so when Sega went mutli-platform, this online multiplayer game was a natural port. Fortunately, I can say this "mousey" puzzle game is quite addicting and fun.

Gameplay
ChuChu enjoys a colorful, bright set up which really works for this game and is pleasing to the eye. The cute mice and evil "cats" all look nice and I found myself giggling like a school-girl watching my little mice run around the maze I had guided them through. In short, graphics may not matter much to a puzzle game, but at least aren't staring at a bland screen, which never changes or has little animation.

Fun
No doubt about it, Rocket is a an addictive, fun game that those with puzzle game affinities won't be able to put down. For the rest of us, the same. Unless you enjoy loads of action and nothing but it, there is no doubt you will like this game. If you missed this game when it came out, go pick it up from the bargain bin and revisit the fun of sending your mice off to mars...or wherever those rockets go...

Story
ChuChu Rocket! (Fact: the japanese word "chu" means "mouse" in english) is a game that isn't meant to be serious, which you can see instantly when you start it up and a bright orange cat glares at you while a cartoonish rocket circles the title. This game is a puzzle title, simple as that. But wait, it's not so simple. Here's the twist: you are challenged with the goal of making sure your mice make it to their rocket while dodging cats, bottomless pits, being eternally stuck in a loop and other hazards. Before you do this, you get a certain amount of tiles that will change the direction of your troop of mice. The problem is, the mice follow the walls placed around each stage and blindly march into any of the hazards you don't want them to run into. Fortunately, the game allows you to test the stages over and over to see the pattern of the mice and then carefully place the tiles divvied to you. Another bonus is that fact that the game has a smooth learning curve that gives you time to learn how the game flows, and this game is so easy to learn I had it going in seconds. But don't get me wrong, this baby gets HARD and you will find yourself puzzled how to complete a level, but once you figure it out, there is a lot of satisfaction from working for it. The game also boasts multiplayer modes, a stage attack mode in which you get unlimited tiles but have to guide your mice to their escape rocket in a limited amount of time, and a character and level desginer. The latter two being a large bonus.

Graphics
A nice feature of ChuChu is that because of the low amount of memory the simplistic (but still pleasing to the eye) graphics and the many stages leave area for some excellent sound effects and decent music. While the music isn't bad, it isn't a theatrical score and you really won't be paying attention to the music while attempting to figure out the puzzles. One of the things that surprised me as the fact that at the beginning of each stage a full voice counts down until it starts (in the stage attack level it actually counts down the last five seconds of your time). Hey, simple things astound me sometimes, but I wouldn't expect anything like that in a GBA puzzle game. In short, your ears won't bleed from listening to the game as you groove to the puzzles(or yell at them).

Sound
This game's replay value is almost limitless. From tons and tons of puzzles to the fact that it includes a level designer extends the life of this game tenfold. You can also create your own versions of the cats, mice, and basically anything in the Paint-like program included. In addition to all this, you can link up buddies, play any level or game type you want or send them your cool new "Zelda" characters and levels to see who is "top mouse". Even if this game was stripped of single player, it would still be an excellent addition to any gamer's library.
