Star X Review
Introduction Star X is the kind of game some people like and that some people hate. Its a clone. A clone of what you may ask? Well, it is a pure clean cut Star Fox clone with very little in the way of innovation. Does that make it a bad game? No, of course not. Unfortunately the game doesn't suffer from being a clone. It suffers from having one of the worst Game Boy Advance control schemes I have ever seen. This makes the fun factor take a nose dive. It is competent but do not expect to always have a good time with this game.
Gameplay The Graphics are nicely detailed and are as three dimensional as Game Boy Advance games come. The enemies are nicely detailed and the environments are varied. The ship you control though is quite dull and the explosions are not very interesting to look at. One point many should consider is that the graphics may or may not appeal to certain gamers. Some will say its too blocky and has no detail and other will say that it does great and complements the Game Boy Advance hardware. I am in between and it is mainly because it looks just as good as Star Fox on the Super Nintendo and somewhat even better at some points. The biggest con about the visuals though is that the framerate dips frequently. Overall the graphics are also a mixed bag, except for the fact that its a love or hate situation.
The sound is nothing to scream home about either. It will sometimes crackle and it is not as clear as it could be. The music tracks are neat but they quickly become repetitive and it really does not do anything for me. I think that the sound could have been a lot better.
Story The gameplay is far from extraordinary and it doesn't show at first. The game starts off as any star fox clone would. Your in a ship and you must shoot things. The plot is thin and even though this genre isn't known for great plots, the game and its flaws make you wish it had something to compensate with. Its basic controls are simple but moving the ship around and hitting your targets is an entirely different story. It is very difficult and it may even make some gamers turn away from the game because of it. The overall difficulty of the game is immensely high and since the game is quite long (22 levels), it may depress certain players.
Its quite long for an action game of this type and the bosses are interesting but the controls pretty much kill the game. Overall, a lot of work needed to be done and as it stands, it wasn't.
Graphics The game is a great game to look at but do not expect to have a fun time playing this as it is the number one game for the Game Boy Advance that had potential and it was washed down the drain. A rental is recommended but a purchase is not highly reasonable. So go try it, if you must.
